Scope of Timeline
- December: Applications open

Program Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age prior to scheduled start date
- Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
- Must be able to commit to the full 10-12 weeks’ time frame between June and August.
- Interns will be expected to work 40 hours a week.
- Candidates are eligible to apply to the internship within one year of their last degree attained.
- We do not have a GPA requirement.
- Applicants must have completed at least one year of accredited university or community college course work to be considered for an internship.
- We currently do not offer visa sponsorship to interns.
Internship Project Summary
Sangamo Therapeutics is seeking a talented bioinformatician interested in working on real-world problems in curing human diseases. The ideal candidate has skills in programming as well as good background knowledge in molecular biology and genomics.
Essential Functions
- Evaluate sequencing QC metrics for various standard Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) workflows (RNA-seq, amplicons, WGS, ATAC-seq, etc.)
- Implement bioinformatics QC methods in a report framework
- Write custom plugin code for QC framework
- Establish QC thresholds for rejecting data
- Write new algorithms and software for detecting aberrant samples / DNA reads
- Propose integrations into production workflow for metrics
Education, Experience And Skills Requirements
- Education required: M.Sc.
- Years of experience required: 0
- Must have basic competency in Linux command line operation, compilation and configuration of open-source software, and programming in at least one scripting language (Python, Ruby, Perl, etc.)
Other Qualifications
- Familiarity with git and version control systems
- Experience with Python packaging
- Experience with workflow engines common in NGS processing (Toil, Airflow, CWL, etc.)
- Experience with Illumina sequencing data, or other popular sequencing technologies (Pacific Biosciences, Oxford Nanopore)
