SUMMARY:NCGR 2022 Virtual Differential Expression (DE) Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Differential Expression (DE) entails examining the fraction of the genome that is responsible for making products that drive organismal function. Gene expression is influenced by various extrinsic physiological and environmental as well as several intrinsic properties of the organism. Whole transcriptome profiles are becoming increasingly popular\, useful and generate large volumes of data. Knowing how to handle\, analyze\, and make biological inferences on this scale of data is a valuable skill-set for students and researchers. \nWhen\nJanuary 3 – 7\, 2022 (5 days)\n9 am – 4 pm \nWhere\nOnline (by the National Center for Genome Resources (NCGR) Santa Fe\, NM) \nAudience\nThis program is geared towards training biologists (undergraduates\, graduates and researchers) with minimal or no bioinformatics experience. Space is limited. \nObjective\nStudents will acquire the skill set to independently analyze RNA-Seq data using the command line interface\, analytical workflows and current DE tools. UNIX fundamentals\, RNA-Seq\, data QC\, alignments\, read count generation and pathway analysis. Visualization will also be briefly covered with topics such as generation of simple graphs using R and utilizing genome browsers (e.g. Integrative Genomics Viewer (IGV)). \n  \nFor more details\, visit: NCGR 2022 Virtual Differential Expression (DE) Workshop | New Mexico INBRENew Mexico INBRE (nminbre.org) \n

SUMMARY:RI INBRE: 2nd Rhode Island Microbiome Symposium
DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to attend the 2nd Rhode Island Microbiome Symposium to be held January 14\, 2022 at Avedisian Hall at the University of Rhode Island.  This symposium is to bring together Rhode Island and other researchers who conduct or are interested in conducting microbiome research.  The symposium will include keynote speakers Dr. Alvaro Sanchez (Yale) and Dr. Sue Ishaq (University of Maine)\, formal talks from regional researchers\, lightning talks for students and postdocs\, and a poster session. \nThe goal of this symposium is to promote microbiome and microbial research in Rhode Island and the Northeast by bringing together researchers from state universities and hospitals who currently work on microbiome research or who are interested in starting microbiome research.  We hope this symposium will stimulate networking and result in new collaborations\, grant proposals and manuscripts.  While the scope is broad to encourage participation\, the general focus will be on microbiome research relevant to the State of Rhode Island such as ocean health\, aquaculture and precision medicine initiatives. \nFor questions contact:\nChristopher Hemme\nDirector\, RI-INBRE Bioinformatics Core\nOffice: 495K\, College of Pharmacy\, University of Rhode Island\nPhone: 401.874.9862\nEmail: hemmecl@uri.edu \nRhode Island Microbiome Symposium 2022 – Rhode Island IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (uri.edu) \n

SUMMARY:20th LBRN Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Each year the LBRN program has an annual meeting in which program participants\, committee members\, and administrators meet to review individual research accomplishments and to discuss the overall program activity. Summer research faculty and graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to present their LBRN sponsored research\, and talks are scheduled to highlight sponsored research projects from partnered campuses across the state. \nLast Date for registration: January 7\, 2022 \nPlease save the date for January 28-29\, 2022 as we plan our upcoming 20th! Annual Meeting. We’re carefully considering the current pandemic situation as we plan our upcoming meeting. \nThis year’s meeting is being held on January 28-29\, 2022\, the format is still being determined. \nOral Presenters: Full Project PIs\, INBRE / COBRE Collaboration Supplemental Project PIs\, LBRN Maternal Health Supplemental Project PIs\, LBRN Graduate Students (Flash talks)\, and invited guests. \nPoster Sessions: All projects currently funded by the LBRN and Summer Graduate students are required to submit an abstract to participate in the poster session. LBRN Undergraduate Summer students and all biomedical researchers within the state of Louisiana are also expected to submit abstracts. The poster abstract submission form will be sent after your registration. \nTo recognize the efforts\, we will continue the tradition of awarding: \n\n1st and 2nd place award for Graduate and Undergraduate Posters\,\n1st place award for Graduate Flash talks\,\n1st and 2nd place awards for Project Posters and finally\,\n1st place award for Oral Presentations by Full project PIs.\n\nFor more details visit: 20th LBRN Annual Meeting (lsu.edu)

SUMMARY:NCGR 2022 Virtual Metagenomics Workshop
DESCRIPTION:NCGR 2022 Virtual Metagenomics Workshop\nWhen\nJanuary 31 – February 4\, 2022 (5 days)\n9 am – 4 pm \nWhere\nOnline (by the National Center for Genome Resources (NCGR) Santa Fe\, NM) \nAudience\nThis program is geared towards training biologists (undergraduates\, graduates\, and researchers) with minimal or no bioinformatics experience. Space is limited. \nObjective\nStudents will use the command-line interface to learn and conduct 16S Community Profiling and whole-genome Metagenomics and meta-transcriptomics analysis. Relevant tools such as QIIME2 will be used for community analysis and Centrifuge\, MEGAN\, DIAMOND\, and other tools for meta-transcriptomics analysis. \nTopic overview\nMicrobes are extremely essential for every part of human life. Microbes are closely associated with plants and animals and participate in the healthy functioning of hosts by making all nutrients\, vitamins and metals available to them.  Our gut microbes for instance make energy from food available to us while protecting us from other pathogenic bacteria. Hence it is evident\, microbes do not conduct these functions as single entities\, instead as complex communities.  Through the metagenomics workshop\, we will use computational methods to maximize our understanding of the collective genetic composition as well as the activities of complex microbial communities sampled from diverse environments. \nApplication Due 11:59pm January 25th.  Late applications will not be accepted.  Selection Committee to select participants shortly after the deadline. If any questions arise while reviewing your application packet\, we will contact you directly. \nhttps://nminbre.org/ncgr-2022-virtual-metagenomics-workshop/
