SUMMARY:Summer Bioinformatics Bootcamp 2022
DESCRIPTION:The upcoming Bootcamp is already being planned for the summer of 2022. This time\, students are expected to learn about similar topics. This time\, the Bootcamp will be expanded to 4 weeks and participants will have more time to develop independent research projects. \n Daily training is most beneficial to those with minimal background in bioinformatics and is supported by hands-on mentorship\, troubleshooting\, and project-oriented learning. Only students from West Virginia institutions are welcome to apply as a limited number of seats are available. \nAbout Bootcamp:- \nThe 4 week-long Bioinformatics Bootcamp is designed to take you from little/no computational experience to bioinformatics literacy. At the end of this course you will: \n\nNavigate the Linux operating system and the command-line interface (CLI)\nWrite BASH and Python scripts\nConstruct basic bioinformatics pipelines for data analysis\nKnow-how find\, to interpret and download reference genomes\nUnderstand the basics of genome assembly and sequence alignment\nBe able to detect variants in DNA sequences using a reference genome\nPerform a simple differential expression analysis on RNAseq data\nSubmit jobs to a supercomputer\n\nFrom June 6th to June 30th we will meet from 9-5 (two three-hour sessions with a break for lunch) Monday through Friday. The Bootcamp will culminate in the INBRE Summer Research Symposium held on July 26th. \nPersonal Essay:\nA description of how this Bootcamp would impact your education or further your long-term career goals. Why do you want to attend and what do you hope to get out of the workshop? Please send a one-page or less document in .docx or pdf format. \nTranscripts:\nSend a pdf version of your college transcripts (official or unofficial). \nCV/Resume:\nAlso\, attach a .docx or .pdf of your curriculum vitae (or resume) with the rest of your application package. \nIf you are interested in participating in the workshop this summer please submit the following items to wvinbre.summerbootcamp@gmail.com on or before April 20th \nA WV-INBRE Bootcamp organizer will contact you by April 23rd regarding your application status! \nThe Bootcamp is organized by Dr. Denvir and Dr. Garrison. SUMMARY:NCGR 2022 Virtual Metagenomics Workshop
DESCRIPTION:NCGR 2022 Virtual Metagenomics Workshop\nWhen\nJanuary 31 – February 4\, 2022 (5 days)\n9 am – 4 pm \nWhere\nOnline (by the National Center for Genome Resources (NCGR) Santa Fe\, NM) \nAudience\nThis program is geared towards training biologists (undergraduates\, graduates\, and researchers) with minimal or no bioinformatics experience. Space is limited. \nObjective\nStudents will use the command-line interface to learn and conduct 16S Community Profiling and whole-genome Metagenomics and meta-transcriptomics analysis. Relevant tools such as QIIME2 will be used for community analysis and Centrifuge\, MEGAN\, DIAMOND\, and other tools for meta-transcriptomics analysis. \nTopic overview\nMicrobes are extremely essential for every part of human life. Microbes are closely associated with plants and animals and participate in the healthy functioning of hosts by making all nutrients\, vitamins and metals available to them.  Our gut microbes for instance make energy from food available to us while protecting us from other pathogenic bacteria. Hence it is evident\, microbes do not conduct these functions as single entities\, instead as complex communities.  Through the metagenomics workshop\, we will use computational methods to maximize our understanding of the collective genetic composition as well as the activities of complex microbial communities sampled from diverse environments. \nApplication Due 11:59pm January 25th.  Late applications will not be accepted.  Selection Committee to select participants shortly after the deadline. If any questions arise while reviewing your application packet\, we will contact you directly. \nhttps://nminbre.org/ncgr-2022-virtual-metagenomics-workshop/

SUMMARY:NCGR 2022 Virtual Differential Expression (DE) Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Differential Expression (DE) entails examining the fraction of the genome that is responsible for making products that drive organismal function. Gene expression is influenced by various extrinsic physiological and environmental as well as several intrinsic properties of the organism. Whole transcriptome profiles are becoming increasingly popular\, useful and generate large volumes of data. Knowing how to handle\, analyze\, and make biological inferences on this scale of data is a valuable skill-set for students and researchers. \nWhen\nJanuary 3 – 7\, 2022 (5 days)\n9 am – 4 pm \nWhere\nOnline (by the National Center for Genome Resources (NCGR) Santa Fe\, NM) \nAudience\nThis program is geared towards training biologists (undergraduates\, graduates and researchers) with minimal or no bioinformatics experience. Space is limited. \nObjective\nStudents will acquire the skill set to independently analyze RNA-Seq data using the command line interface\, analytical workflows and current DE tools. UNIX fundamentals\, RNA-Seq\, data QC\, alignments\, read count generation and pathway analysis. Visualization will also be briefly covered with topics such as generation of simple graphs using R and utilizing genome browsers (e.g. Integrative Genomics Viewer (IGV)). \n  \nFor more details\, visit: NCGR 2022 Virtual Differential Expression (DE) Workshop | New Mexico INBRENew Mexico INBRE (nminbre.org) \n
