Dr. Steven A. Weinman is an established investigator who is the PI for Kansas Center for Metabolism and Obesity Research (KC-MORE) Association,  bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and completed a combined MD-PhD degree at Washington University in St. Louis. He subsequently did Internal Medicine Residency and Gastroenterology Fellowship at Yale University and has been on the faculty at KUMC since 2009.
He has an active clinical practice and research program in Liver Disease. He is best known for his work on pathogenic mechanisms in Hepatitis C where his lab was the first to demonstrate the interactions of HCV viral proteins with mitochondria and the impact of these interactions on liver oxidative stress pathways. In recent years his work has focused on the cellular mechanisms of steatohepatitis, particularly in alcohol-associated liver disease, and the role of macrophages in liver disease.
His research accomplishments have been recognized with the KU Research Investigator Award, membership on multiple NIH study sections serving as Chairman for 6 of these panels. He is a past editorial board member for Hepatology, Hepatology Communications (Associate Editor), American Journal of Physiology and is currently Field Editor for Alcohol: Clinical and Experimental Research. He is Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases where he serves on multiple committees. As Director of the Liver Center at KUMC Dr. Weinman oversees the Hepatology Clinical Studies Unit and the Liver Tissue Bank which collects and distributes liver tissue and blood samples. These facilities directly support clinical and translational research by providing resources and skilled clinical research coordinator expertise to individuals engaged in investigator-initiated clinical research in Liver Disease. Dr. Weinman has been active in mentoring and development of junior colleagues for many years and is the recipient of the University of Kansas Excellence in Mentoring Award in 2019
