Dr. Thomas Gettys earned his Ph.D. in Nutrition/Physiology from Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina in 1984. He joined the faculty of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in 2001 to establish the Laboratory of Adipocyte Signaling and was appointed Chief of the Experimental Obesity Division in 2003.

Dr. Gettys currently has adjunct appointments in the Department of Pharmacology at the LSU Health Science Center in New Orleans and the Department of Nutrition at the LSU campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and is also an external advisor for the NIH Mouse Metabolic Centers Consortium and an adjunct professor of the Joint Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism Program, Louisiana State University Health Science Center & Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Dr. Gettys is currently a member of the Scientific Review Group for the American Diabetes Association.

Dr. Gettys has a broad interest in the signaling systems which link cell surface receptors to transcriptional programs regulating the metabolic and endocrine functions of adipose tissue. An additional area of interest includes the nutrient sensing mechanisms linking modulation of specific subsets of genes by dietary constituents. He has authored over 100 peer reviewed publications as well as several book chapters.

He is also working as Principal Investigator of Pennington Biomedical Center for Biomedical Research Excellence, Louisiana.
