The South Carolina IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (SC INBRE) is a state-wide network comprised of three Comprehensive Research Universities (CRUs) and eleven Primarily Undergraduate Institutions (PUIs) whose goals are to enhance the biomedical research infrastructure and promote undergraduate research training in South Carolina while increasing access to research opportunities and careers in biomedicine for underrepresented minorities and economically disadvantaged students. The scientific themes in South Carolina IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence emerge from the research expertise in South Carolina and include Biochemistry and Cell/Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Regenerative Medicine, and Neuroscience.

The Developmental Research Project and Bioinformatics Pilot Project programs will continue to support faculty-driven research and student training. SC INBRE will continue to promote undergraduate research training at network PUIs through SC INRBE-sponsored Undergraduate Research Programs and proposes to expand training capacity at five PUIs through the renovation of existing space/facilities. Career and professional development activities will be provided to SC INBRE faculty and students, as well as opportunities to network and develop collaborations with SC INBRE colleagues. Outreach programs developed at selected SC INBRE institutions will engage high school teachers and students, strengthening the pipeline of future college students interested in biomedical research careers and actively encouraging participation by underrepresented minority students and those from underserved areas in South Carolina.

The goal of theĀ South Carolina IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) is to increase the NIH research capacity of the state by programmatic expansion and networking of research activities of faculty and students at academic institutions through the state. The South Carolina IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (SC INBRE) and the SC INBRE Bioinformatics Core solicits applications for the Student-initiated Research Project (SIRP) program. This program is designed to enrich the academic experience of students and to better prepare future generations of researchers, investigators, and entrepreneurs throughout the network. SIRP applications must apply bioinformatics tools to biomedical research questions. The project should include acquisition and/or computational analyses of genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and/or health data. The project must fit within the broad scientific focus areas of outh Carolina IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence: Biochemistry/Cell and Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Bio/Biomedical Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, Neuroscience.

This SC INBRE goal will be achieved by supporting the career development of faculty and hands-on research training of students at the three research universities in South Carolina -Clemson University, the University of South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina- and at ten 4-year institutions: Claflin University, Coastal Carolina University, The College of Charleston, Francis Marion University, Furman University in consortium with Converse College, Presbyterian College, South Carolina State University, the University of South Carolina Aiken and Winthrop University. Also affiliated with SC INBRE are Anderson University, Benedict College, Lander University and the University of South Carolina Beaufort. Furthermore 11 PUIs affiliated to SC INBRE, for more information, please visit: About (scinbre.org)
